Significant figure rules
In a composed operation, intermediate results are not rounded.
Addition / substraction
keep the number of decimals of the term that has the least decimals
Multiplication / division
keep the number of significant figures of the term that has the least significant figures
ln(x) and log(x)
keep as many decimals as significant figures in x
EXAMPLE: ln(8.3e-23) = -22.08
10^x
keep as many significant figures as x has decimals
EXAMPLE: 10^-12.3 = 5e-13
e^x
keep the same amount of significant figures
EXAMPLE: e^5.32 = 204
sin(x)
the number of significant figures of the result equals the sum of the number of significant figures and decimals of x
EXAMPLE: sin(89.31) = .999927
